NGORONGORO CRATER

The World's Largest Intact Caldera

NGORONGORO CONSERVATION AREA

The Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA) was established in 1959 after separation from Serengeti National Park. NCA covers an area of 8292 sq km, ranges from 1020m to 3587m in altitude, and was awarded World Heritage Site and International Biosphere Reserve Status.

Two main geological rifts are located in this region, and nine volcanoes were formed during the past four million years. In addition, the earliest signs of human footprints and bones were found in the area.

What distinguishes NCA from many other parts of Africa is that local Maasai have grazing rights, hence a historic balance of people and nature is being maintained.

NGORONGORO CRATER AND ITS WILDLIFE
Ngorongoro Crater is 19.2 km wide, 610m deep and covers 304 sq km, making it the largest intact caldera in the world. Ever changing weather patterns are creating clouds, which pour over the highlands like giant waves providing a dramatic backdrop to the stunning scenery of ethereal blue-green vistas and abundance of wildlife.

In addition, this area has the highest predator density in the world. At the Crater's base, with its forests, swamps, grasslands and lakes, survival of the fittest still rules. It is here where you will witness the amazing natural drama of wildlife unfold in front of your eyes as lions, elephants buffaloes, wildebeest, zebras, hyenas and many more, graze, chase and make their way around the crater.

Last but not least, the variety of habitats ranging from forests to grasslands provide for a wide range of bird life.
